In the Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2013 earlier this year, the artist Marta Wengorovius in association with architect Francisco Aires Mateus presented this project to build a one-person library. Conceived as a small space where a person can read in solitude for a certain time and then leave the room for another person. So an indefinite succession of people can enjoy reading in solitude for a fixed time.
A simple and minimalist wooden hut with pitched roof and skylights in it to allow the passage of natural light. When we read our minds and imaginary fly to distant places but actually our body is vital in a kind of suspension, the brain takes over and becomes the protagonist leaving the body as a mere container. The cabin reading thus becomes the bag covering our bodies as if we had returned to the womb.
Marta invited twenty people to chose 60 books that are the background reading reading small cabin. The cottage was first opened in Paredes, Portugal, then moved to the capital, Lisbon. Interested persons previously had to choose a time to devote to reading inside the cabin section.
The artist wants to move their project to other countries so that other people can enjoy this relaxed reading away from all that surrounds us and usually constrains.
The act of reading becomes intimate act that should be and that not everyone is able to enforce. Worldly and family obligations prevent us sometimes enjoy the time we all need to read in solitude. That communion with oneself that is carried out by reading the words of another and focusing only on it, without interference or distraction.
