New Outdoor Space Everyone Likes

Even the dog likes it: it is a stroll-across water feature, complete with concrete stepping stones, that is element of a back yard renovation as created by Huettl Landscape Architecture. And that is only a tiny element of the attractions in this easy-to-enjoy outdoor living space. Behind nicely weathered cedar privacy fencing, feathery aspens border a patio and al fresco dining spot comprehensive with a handy grill for quick cookouts. A steel and wood-slat pergola shelters this multi-purposes region as effectively, helping to diffuse the sunshine a tranquil pond, full with floating lilies, flows about a low concrete wall that separates 2 of the outside “rooms” and offers the height for a trickling cascade. On the other side of the wall and its waterfall, native grasses of all sorts give a sense of “cool” and touches of colour.

Kitty-corner from this lounge location, shrubs drape gracefully more than fencing and shade a redwood bench, secluded in its cozy nook yet nevertheless inside effortless interaction of other seating. Square pavers form an informal, rambling patio connecting all the regions, even though wide paths of white stone supply a good accent for dark planters holding what appear to be herbs or other kitchen greens — a sensible aspect to a fairly tiny space that supplies an added advantage for its owners. In the plans, it is simple to see how these “rooms” can give family members just enough space for privacy — or be one particular expansive location for a large gathering of guests. For quiet contemplation or active entertaining, then, it is a winner: the Mangan residence redo by Huettl Landscape Architecture.

Water and Garden in a Small Space: the Weaver Residence by Huettl

You do not have to have land on a grand scale to have a “grand” yard area this Weaver residence garden location, as done by Huettl Landscape Architecture, is proof of that. In reality, this is not the “back yard” of this property at all, but a little, rather narrow side yard, that is graced with this beautiful swimming pool and patio terraces of alternating concrete colors. Just appear at that beautiful mosaic impact along the edges of the pool — equally striking in sun or shade, and in reality complementing the colors of the plantings that surround the water. Note the “clumping” bamboo that appears something but “clumpy” — its gossamer leaves are as light as waves on a pond, in splendid contrast to purple-spiked water plants and swaying prairie grass. And, speaking of ponds…

Even though this distinct “pond” doesn’t have any waves, it does have copper waterspouts — a delightful addition that not only creates a relaxing ambience, but makes swimming even a lot more entertaining. Grouped around this inviting water spot are all the comforts of great outside living: a compact portable fireplace 1 seating region with pottery art accent a second spot with alfresco table, chairs, and umbrellas for handy shade and a wide deck flanked by tall native grasses that provide both privacy screening and subtle color. But there’s another surprise in this compact garden, too: a winding stone path leads to an further patio — a tiny niche with its own water cascade— and a cedar-framed greenhouse at its end. It is a splendid mixture of outside “rooms” in compact space: the Weaver garden, as executed by Huettl Landscape Architecture.

Award-Winning Garden

The owners of this splendid yard in Walnut Creek, California, wanted an inviting space for outdoor living and entertaining that is when they consulted Huettl Landscape Architecture to see to the details — and these have been several. After arranging the water function and cascade, the architects developed the layout about a linear wood deck that runs like a “spine” from the spa area of the yard, across the water, and to a fireplace and patio covered with a trellis. A variety of “rooms” emerge from this layout: the outdoor breakfast deck is like an extension of the kitchen the fireplace and steel arbor echo a household area and the spa and plantings reflect the calm serenity of a bedroom. (Even though it must be said that when the small ones are about, there’s not a lot of calm serenity along the paver paths!)

Plantings here are lush and cool: ground cover and perennials edge the interior and exterior walls, whilst willows and water grasses dot the pond. Color comes from bright lilies and variegated red grasses, but the predominant aura right here is green. Shrubs wrap gracefully about pillars and climb concrete, even though mature trees offer shade general. And cannot you just imagine how gorgeous that steel trellis will be with climbers on it? This plan’s versatility — being equally adaptable to quiet contemplative moments or bunches of family members and close friends in a celebration — hasn’t gone unnoticed, either: in the 2006/2007 Sunset Magazine Dream Garden Awards, this took the Grand Prize! It is a winner all the way around: the garden at the Ott residence, by Huettl Landscape Architecture.

Danville Back Yard, Improved, by Huettl Landscape Architecture

What do you do when you have got some very good elements in a crowded back yard — factors you are fine with keeping — but you nevertheless want to open it up with out tearing everything out? You call experts like Huettl Landscape Architecture to balance the old and the new, as they did with this back yard in Danville, California. Maintaining existing pool decking, they added flagstone terraces and some new masonry walls this delineated back yard “rooms” that both open up the space and give differentiation when it is wanted. Notice the nice touch of retaining walls in front of a wide lawn, fronted by cedar benches, shaded by luxuriant bushes and surrounded by low plantings to give color and visual interest further seating comes from each ornate wrought iron and exciting wicker-effect chairs and tables.

And those are not just plain new walls, either: exactly where there might be a type of unrelieved stone effect, Huettl inserted a nifty water function, a 5 mini-cascade fountain and modest pond, enclosed in gray brick and hosting a bit of native grass at the finish. Colorful grasses accent beds subsequent to the pool deck, the lowest level of 3 terraced levels in an arrangement that allows for effortless “flow” no matter the size of the group. One more good touch: exactly where there’s a mature tree, there’s no sense tearing it out for the sake of installing new wood decking…so the designers didn’t force the concern. They merely cut a modest asymmetrical opening in the wood deck, thereby preserving a healthy tree and its equally welcome shade. It’s all element of clever design and visual expansion that performs, literally, on much more levels than 1!
